Where the numbers come from
- Registration tax (IEDMT): 0 % up to 120 g/km, 4.75 % from 121 to 159, 9.75 % from 160 to 199 and 14.75 % from 200. Some regions raise the top band up to 16 %.
- Tax base for used cars: Spanish tax table value × age coefficient: 100 % up to 1 year, then 84, 67, 56, 47, 39, 34, 28, 24, 19, 17, 13 and 10 % from 12 years.
- VAT from the EU: if the car is 6 months old or less, or has 6,000 km or less, it counts as new and you pay 21 % Spanish VAT on the net price. If it is used, you pay neither VAT nor ITP in Spain.
- From Switzerland: 10 % duty on price + transport (0 % with proof of origin) and 21 % VAT on all of it. Plus IEDMT and the same paperwork as from the EU.
- Comparison: buying from a private seller in Spain you pay ITP on the higher of the price and the table value, plus the €55.70 transfer fee.
- Verdict: “Worth it” if you save at least €1,500 or 5 % of the Spanish price, because importing takes effort and carries risk.
